I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Red Hat (Raleigh, NC) in Jan 2016
Interview
After completing the referral link I was contacted by their HR department 1.5 days later via email. We set up a time for a phone screen. During that, he was checking to see if the position was interesting to me and to give me a brief overview of their company culture. I was impressed that the conversation revolved around my interests vs. a mechanical rundown of my skills. I was then told that the hiring manager would set up a time for a 1:1 which he did a few days later via email.
During the 1:1 with the hiring manager, we mostly touched on behavioral style questions, a overview of my skills and a mix of chit-chat/fun conversation. Then an additional meeting was set up a few days later for a panel interview with a mix of my peers. This and the 1:1 were done via video conference.
The panel had much more intricate questions relating to my skill set but was still very conversational and fun. I then moved on to an on-site interview with a much larger panel of my peers and manager. I gave a presentation showcasing some of my work. They also had more detailed questions. Again, this was also very conversational and fun. During all interview steps, everyone was very accommodating in answering my questions.
I enjoyed the interview process and thought it was thorough. They were definitely gauging to check me for cultural fit. I think (and this is my opinion only) that they felt I had the skills off the bat, all the interviews were really there to see how I'd fit in. This is a energetic, highly collaborative environment. People are very entrepreneurial and passionate and they want to preserve that.
