I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Merck (Newark, NJ) in Apr 2018
Interview
It was pretty intense all day interview starting with a 1 hour presentation about your work + Q and A. Technical questions were asked esp if there was no time during the Q and A. It is a combination of skill, personality and if they can see that you can work well in a group. All in all it was more like a conservation but you are being evaluated with your answers.

Question 1
What is your career plan? How do you motivate people? What are your greatest challenges?
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Merck (Kenilworth, NJ) in Jan 2018
Interview
Overall it is very long, across several months. Guess that is typical for big pharma. Submitting application, got phone interview, got on-site, one month in between each step. Since the process was during the year-end holidays, i have another month of delay. I have two phone interviews with two principal scientists and those were pleasant talk on my own work. The one-day on-site is also quite pleasant, although very tired too. Talked with all directors from other sites and the head of the department, also with scientists inside or outside the group i applied for. Everybody are interested in your presentation and the 1-on-1 always started with your presentation and then moved onto other questions. Very science-based.

Question 1
both phone and on-site interviews are highly science-related. Questions are all based on what you have done and presented.
I applied online. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at Merck (West Point, PA) in Dec 2017
Interview
I applied online and was contacted for a phone interview a couple months later. Then, about a month later, I came on site to interview, and I did not find out whether I was getting the job for about 3 months after that. Communication was lacking for sure, and the process took far too long.
