How did you turn an angry customer around?

I calmed him down by apologizing and asked him what the problem was. Just showing the customer that someone was there listening calmed the customer down. When I couldn't do what he wanted me to do, I asked my manager if there was anything we could do. Unfortunately there wasn't anything we could do because our company had a set policy in returns.
