      Validation Engineer Interview

      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) in Nov 2014

      Interview

I was referred by an employee, but I still had to apply online. 5 days later they wanted to set up a phone screen. The standard questions like why GM, why this role, willingness to relocate, salary expectation, brief overview of internships/coursework. 3 weeks later I was notified of an hour long video interview with 2 of the HR managers. At the interview they told me this role was for midlevel career people, but went ahead and did the interview anyway. Bit confusing as the posting had also included entry level. Both alternated in asking questions and wanted to see me demonstrate the STAR method, what I learnt and how I have used that knowledge in another experience. Some of the questions were tough to answer since I didn't have much experience out of school. There were around 10 questions in total, which took up 90 minutes, more than the allotted hour. The rest of the time I got to ask questions. The interview actually lasted 2 hours and my eyes were exhausted staring at the screen for so long. I had to follow up with them a month later; they said I'll be referred to a graduate-level position. 2 months later I'm invited to another 2 hour video interview for the SAME POSITION, but with different people. Apparently the first interviewers didn't put me in the system that indicates I've gone through this stage. It was more of the same questions and they'll notify me in 'a couple of weeks'. Highly inefficient for such a big company.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) (Milford, MI) in Dec 2025

      Interview

Single round interview with two senior engineers in the same role that as a lot about the experiences on your resume. For myself, they asked a lot about by experiences in test engineering through my internship as well as my involvement within Formula Student over my 4 years of university. Both about the technical aspect and the leadership aspect as my role within the team evolved. The technical aspect of the interview was very lax.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They ask the standard, "get to know you" question like, "what are your hobbies, what got you into engineering, what excites you about this role, etc.

      Validation Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) (Warren, MI) in Oct 2020

      Interview

Overall the interview was a great experience. I was first reached out by my engineering recruiter who does a brief background screening (simple tell me about your self and company based questions). Next was the Hire-Vue interview consist of 3 questions. For me these where technical specific job questions. About a week after, I received the next step to a digital video interview with 2 hiring managers. Who were totally amazing and made me feel very comfortable. The interview starts of with them explaining the available positions and then they ask to briefly get into your background and previous work experience. Then they will ask 3-4 STARL based questions. Make sure you prepare for situation based, conflict and relationship building questions. I really enjoyed the process at GM. The process took about 4+ weeks from start to finish receiving the offer letter. I accepted with no doubt because of a great team and opportunity.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1) Explain something you would like to improve about yourself and what did you do about it? 2) Tell me about a time where it was hard to build a relationship with someone and how did you get around it? 3) Tell me about a time you made a mistake or would do something differently? 4) A company for years have been working and doing something as a routine. But recently you found out there is a huge fault in this method, how did you go about exposing the issue and fixing it? ( This one threw me off wasn’t expecting this)
