I applied online. I interviewed at Centene in May 2023
Interview
First round was the recruiter call. The max pay for this role would likely be 140k according to the recruiter. And this is for a big city with a tech hub. Second round was a 1 hour call with 3 UX leaders - 2 Sr Directors and 1 Mgr. This was the most negative interview I’ve had for a UX role. This was due to the unconventional and rushed style of interviewing and the lack of preparation provided by HR. They were looking for a DS designer, which I was not told until the interview was already scheduled and I asked what to expect. I personally am not looking for a DS role nor is that where my skillset is. I think there could have been better communication between the hiring managers and HR about what they are looking for and what to tell candidates to better prepare. To me, this signifies lack of UX maturity. Usually, in UX interviews, HR is able to clearly, accurately, and proactively tell candidates what the interview process is and what to expect. During the call with the hiring managers, it started with intros, some hard skill and behavioral Qs. Then I had to walk through a case study in 5 minutes. They told me not to present a deck, and to screenshare from my portfolio site. They give you a one minute warning. Then I had to walk through another case study in 1 minute, where they said they really are wanting to see a nice visual UI case study that basically should tell them why they should hire you. Then they do a bunch of rapid fire questions where you get 30-60 seconds to answer their questions. Then you get 5-10 min to ask them questions. Overall, it felt like they were just rushing through and trying to ask as much as possible in a short period of time. It did not feel like a welcoming and personable experience. I heard back 11 days later via an auto rejection email. Since I made it to the HM round, I find it impersonal when rejections at this point are auto emails vs. the recruiter personally reaching out to let you know.

Interview
First call with recruiter a week after I applied, then two weeks to schedule first interview. Interview scheduled with a VP which I found odd as usually that’s 2nd or 3rd. Interviewer started the call by asking if I had enough experience for position as I hadn’t had exact job title before. Fair enough, I went into my background. Interviewer again stated that they didn’t see my having held a Project Manager title specifically. I was polite and offered to end interview early if they felt I wasn’t experienced enough . Interviewer seemed offended and pointed out they “had selected” me. Not sure why they didn’t review my resume more thorough if that was the case. Call dragged on, lady was very impatient at end and borderline rude. Couldn’t answer my role relevant questions as she had “just started position a week ago”. Received rejection email two hours later.

Interview
The process between me submitting my application and getting an interview took awhile. The hiring manager was very nice, it didn’t really feel like an interview but more of a conversation. It was a two round interview. I then interviewed with the hiring managers boss, who did tell me it was between another candidate and I. I want to say about a week and a half later after my second round interview I got a call from the recruiter with an offer. The background check is pretty intense so make sure all of your information is accurate.
