I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at CarMax (Omaha, NE) in Nov 2010
Interview
I applied online and was contacted within 24 hours to go to an interview. I interviewed in a hiring center. Two sales managers gave me approximately 10 canned questions such as "tell me about yourself" and then passed me onto the General Manager who offered me a job on the spot and gave limited commission and benefits info. He tried to close me on the spot and I decided to think about it over the weekend.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at CarMax in Jan 2012
Interview
They contacted me by e-mail and arranged for a very pleasant phone interview.
That was followed by a visit to a local branch where they asked me to do on-line stuff,
like IQ test, etc. A little later, I was interviewed by two store managers who were very
polite and intelligent. A week later, I went to see another gentleman who runs the HR
department for the region. That was another great interview by a very kind man. A week
later I was offered a position and I accepted.

Question 1
Tell me about a time you made a risky decision in your last job?
The process took 2 days. I interviewed at CarMax (Duarte, CA) in Feb 2012
Interview
The process seems to be very involved starting with a long online application, followed by a group meeting to meet Managers from several different departments within the company. Then this is followed by a tour of the facility, all the while the group is being told what a great place Carmax is to work. The tour is followed by a computer questionnaire about how honest you are. After the honesty probe there is a one on one interview. Following the one on one I was invited back for a role play that I haven't completed. After I complete the role play I will update my review.
