I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at CarMax
Interview
Longest and most unprofessional interview I've ever gone through.
Arrived 10 minutes early.
Waited for 30 minutes for HR to come out and start.
Took a questionnaire, "have I killed anyone," etc.
Verified my resume information.
Waited 30 minutes for Buyer's manager to come interview me.
He asked poor situational questions. "What would you do if...?" Common sense answers.
Waited for another 30 minutes for the department manager to come out.
He asked random questions about my past work experience. "What did you do at...?"
I asked some questions.
Interview complete.
I spent over 2 1/2 hours for this interview and the vast majority of the time was spent waiting. I've had plenty of interview and I have never been jerked around this much. I got an offer the next week but declined for two reasons. I could never work at a company that did that to their employees and the pay was horrid for the work.
I applied through college or university. I interviewed at CarMax in Mar 2015
Interview
It started with an oncampus interview. The interviewer was really nice and personable. About 2 days later got a phone call from recruiter about on-site interview. Few weeks later I went to visit their office and it was great. The recruiter and interviewers were nice and welcoming. I got an offer within another week.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Standard behavioral questions like how do you handle conflicts, what do you do if you strongly disagree with your boss, does your resume entirely reflects who you are etc.
Technical: Basic SQL questions like select, insert, delete etc
I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at CarMax (Rochester, NY) in Jan 2015
Interview
The process started with an online application, and followed with a phone interview. The phone interview was relatively straight forward and not difficult. It was more of a casual conversation.
I was then scheduled for an in-person interview. Things got more interesting at this point. When I arrived, they sat me in front of a computer to answer some brief questions about my previous employment. I then interviewed with one sales manager who went over my answers to that the survey on the computer. The third phase of the interview was talking with two more sales managers at the same time. Phase four included a role playing exercise where the three of use went out in the garage bay area and I acted as though I was selling one of the two managers a car.
Between the phases of the interview, I spent a lot of time sitting and waiting in the lobby area. While the actual interviews were not unusually long, the whole process took about three and a half hours.

Question 1
The questions on the computer survey were interesting. They wanted to know if the candidate had ever stolen anything from a previous employer. Another question asked if one had ever received discipline at a previous job. The questions were presented from an angle of "It's ok if you did, just let us know. It's perfectly normal." The whole process was really bizarre.
