I applied in-person. I interviewed at Big 5 Sporting Goods in Oct 2012
Interview
Applications are now online, though I picked mine up in person before this policy was implemented. It was about a week before I was called in for an interview.
The interview itself was fairly easy, there were no specific questions in regards to products or my knowledge thereof.
At the end of the interview I was taken out onto the sales floor and given a basic math test that included adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing real numbers and decimals without a calculator. I was told this was to ensure that if power was lost I could complete a transaction accurately without the aid of the register's computer. I found this a simple test, though I can imagine some would find it difficult. I am not sure of what counts as "passing" or if failure would result in not being hired.
I was offered the current minimum wage, which was somewhere around $8/hr
It was about a week before I was put on the schedule and began working.

Interview
The interview was easy, with basic interview questions and one asking about how you would recommend products for someone looking to get into a certain sport. Didn't get a call back though, probably because I mentioned I was only looking for a summer job.
