Interview
in 2010, I got two phone interviews. Failed miserably at the second.

That was my second interview after graduation with Ph.D. In Ph.D. training, it is about research (for papers) and I never really cared about how fast my research code runs, since it is not on large scale data. If I had known they care so much about coding, I would have just studied the course just like it is the most important course in the world.
