I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Oct 2013
Interview
Submitted an application online, and received an email back very quickly. They asked to schedule a 60 minute phone interview in the next couple days. I spoke with a "sourcing specialist" who worked for amazon for about 45 minutes. They asked mostly background information on my previous positions and wanted to know technical information. Not many personality questions, they were more based on technical qualifications and experience.

What is the largest project you have managed? And what was your biggest challenge?
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Feb 2015
Interview
The interview process varies from group to group, much like I am sure is the case with the culture there. One group with whom I spoke was very engaging and encouraged questions. He spoke of the team dynamic, the benefits of the team and company and a little about some of the challenges. Another team with whom I met was different. The interviewer, at the end, told me he wasn't going to answer various questions, four of which were questions I had jotted down. With that I was discouraged and the interview ended sort of abruptly. However, I am still very interested in working there so it's a matter of perserverance
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Apr 2015
Interview
Recruiter contacted me by phone, out of the blue. I had just updated my resume in their system while applying for a different position. The role she called about was in Seattle (I don't live there now), but after talking with her the job sounded so interesting that I decided it was worth pursuing.
So, my conversation with the recruiter lasted about 30 minutes. She was very vague about the role and apologized but said due to nature of the role and fact it was in a new group, that without an NDA she could not go into great detail. There was still enough to pique my interest. I found her very straightforward. Kind of machine-like, as others have mentioned, however I was able to break the ice a bit and have a good conversation with her. She told me that she had already reviewed my resume with the hiring manager, and after talking with me she would forward my contact information on to a coordinator, who would arrange a time for a phone interview with the hiring manager.
As others have mentioned, I heard nothing for several days. Just when I was about to reach out to the coordinator (the first interviewer had verbally mentioned his name), he contacted me via email. I sent him my availability and within 48 hours, I had an interview booked for 2 days later.
