      Financial Analyst Interview

      Apr 28, 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Seattle, WA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Mar 2016

      Interview

The entire process took three weeks from start to finish. I applied online, and was contacted by a finance recruiter via email a couple of days later to schedule the first of two 45-minute phone interviews. The first was with the hiring manager, who is also the manager for this team. The second was with a senior analyst on the team. The two phone interviews took place over a course of a week, and I heard back pretty quickly (within a day) about whether or not I would continue onto the next step. My onsite was scheduled two weeks after my second phone interview. Before my onsite, I spoke with an HR recruiter about salary expectations, Amazon culture, and surprisingly, he told me exactly what kinds of questions the interviewers were going to ask me. Each of the 7 people I was scheduled to meet with in Seattle were assigned one of the "Amazon Leadership Principles", and asked me behavioral questions relating to each. The week prior to my interview, I compiled a list of my most notable and impactful projects and categorized them under each of the leadership principles in order to prepare. The onsite took place from 8am to 3:30pm. Each of the people I interviewed with was either a manager of the team, or a manager of another team I would be working closely with, with the exception of one individual who was the manager of a completely unrelated team (I think he was the "bar-raiser"). The interviews lasted for about 45 minutes each, and a senior analyst on the team took me to lunch. I am not the strongest interviewer at all, so honestly all interviews are difficult for me -- but the topics of discussion were exactly as I had expected, and there weren't any surprises. Every question needed to be answered with a specific anecdote or experience, and I had to explain my role, how I approached the situation, and what the outcome was. Based on feedback from my friends who already work at Amazon, I communicated with as positive of a tone as possible (e.g., focusing on my strengths and successes rather than where I made mistakes, talking about my previous employer in a positive light, avoiding making criticisms or negative comments about the situation or people involved, etc.) and I used as many statistics, dollar figures, and other numbers as possible to illustrate the outcomes. After all of the interviews, I had one hour to complete an Excel test. I heard back about the decision within one week and accepted the offer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Tell me about a time when you facilitated a radical change in process - how did you contribute, and what was the outcome? Tell me about a time when your analysis was wrong - how did you find out you were incorrect, and how did you manage through that? Tell me about a time when you didn't have the data to support a decision - what was the challenge you were faced with, and how did you handle the situation?

      Interview

Straightforward process: 1. introduction 2. Why Amazon? Why ads? + three somewhat complex BQ questions 4. a short case study 5. My turn to ask questions. Prepare your BQ really good and go learn the LPs cuz I definitely failed that part and was confused by myself during the storytelling.
