The interns are not OK, according to internship reviews on Glassdoor: Near-record low shares of interns say they would recommend their internship to a friend.

The share of interns who would recommend their internship to a friend declined sharply during the first year of the pandemic, but it began to rebound in Tech and Finance between 2021 and mid-2022. Since mid-2022, however, it has collapsed in Tech.

Only 42% of tech interns in 2023-Q2* would recommend their experience to a friend, not far off the record low of 41% in 2023-Q1. Slimmer budgets leading to scaled backed internship experiences, fewer internship opportunities more broadly, and return-to-office mandates are obvious culprits. Interns in Management & Consulting and in Financial Services appear to be faring somewhat better, though intern satisfaction remains below pre-pandemic norms for both industries.
