Pros

Really enjoyed teaching Pastry classes, having a full staff to help out in a full class, equipment availability, display of products for the class to upsell. I'd work for Sur La Table again, but in Seattle instead.

Cons

Having to last minute shop for ingredients that may have been used by someone else's class, walking into a dirty kitchen, not having a staff for dishes, not having break snacks, ovens that aren't regulated, refrigerators that break and your food that you've prepped for a packed class right after Christmas is now spoiled and can't be used. Honestly the class should have been rescheduled. I felt terrible for everyone, but did my best, and know I received awful reviews. 4 people stuck it out and went home with food after they traveled 200 miles to the class. In the end I lost my job because I was an instructor, not an entertainer. I Loved my job. It was the best job ever. And I was heartbroken, over this. I worked hard, came early, stayed late, did what ever it took and they still let me go. The reviews were terrible, the store lost money, Walnut Creek is a hard area to work in, lots people with money and attitudes to match. The people of Walnut Creek have spoken!

Pros

the staff are all wonderful

Cons

corporate and our dm are out of touch with what goes on in the store. we are required to hit goals that are out of touch with where retail is. we have product that is inferior and continuously gets returned and the store is penalized for the return. then our review comes and we get a poor review because our numbers and engagement (which is a ridiculous barometer) is not where they want it to be.

Pros

Some of the great people, both associates and local customers. Generous 40% discount, only off regularly priced merchandise. Associates should be allowed to double-dip off clearance merchandise. Easier/faster to get rid of. For full-timers: benefits.

Cons

What isn't wrong: starts from the top. There's no CEO, no regional, only incompetent higher-ups including a DM that should have been fired a long time ago for his lack of leadership skills (stop pulling out the management book and be human) who do not listen to their staff needs. Guess what? Every store is different. Not one is alike. Get some new interesting merchandise! Every year it's the same items just different color. Boring and uninspiring. Nothing makes you special anymore. Pay your staff more. Never worked in a company where the turnover rate was so high. Learn how to talk to your people. Happy associates-->happy customers. It's not brain surgery. And don't require your staff to fulfill ridiculous availability requirements when you are not even able to give them more than a 4-hour shift a week. Also, the MOD program= garbage! Sometimes there's no one to manage other than one associate.
