Pros
Santillana is a world-wide publishing company, well-known, and highly respected. Their products tend to be the best in the business. To work for Santillana, you must be one of the best in what you do, be it creative writing, editing, or graphic design. To have Santillana in your CV or resume, is to have a badge of honor within the textbook publishing industry. There is a saying among current and former Santillana employees that goes: "If you survive Santillana, you can survive anything -and anywhere- else."
Cons
They treat their employees like dirt, and pay them a pittance for their very hard work. Management expects not just 100% from their employees; they expect 200%, working unpaid overtime hours, weekends, and holidays, if necessary. Family time? Forget it. Sick leave? Forget it. Working eight-hour days? Forget it. I had to give up Grad School (taking night classes) because I had to work so much overtime (unpaid). At the end of the month, and working 60-hour weeks, I ended up earning a little over $8 an hour. When I was hired, I signed a contract for a $2,000 monthly salary, flat. In San Juan, that isn't a living wage, by far. But publishing jobs (or any other job, for that matter) here are hard to come by. I was terrified of being unemployed, so I sucked it up and accepted their offer.
