Pros

The sector where this company resides provides very good challenges from the technical perspective, and likely from the financial, sales and marketing perspectives as well but I am an engineer. The stock does well.

Cons

PW is a United Technologies company so all benefits are provided by UTC. 401k matching is so-so, 3.6% max. They offer a Roth 401k which I believe is very new to US 401k retirement plans as a whole. Vacation offering is poor. Get 3 weeks at 7 years and I believe 4 weeks at 14 or 15 years. It's so far out I don't really care to know. I worked 10 years at Honeywell in Phoenix and their 401k and vacation benefits blows UTC away. The stock does well, which makes up for the poor matching, but the stock does well at an expense to the employee. UTC is shareholder focused and therefore, the UTC companies need to operate in the same fashion. For the area UTC (and PW) is mainly in, Connecticut, it seems that in general, the pay is average at best. Cost of living (taxes, taxes and more taxes) in CT is fairly high for a small town-type place. Long hours are expected yet young families at PW suffer. Childcare facilities close between 5:30pm and 6pm yet in many groups, 10+ hour days are expected/required. Not possible for working parents with young children. An extreme would be PW subsidized daycare, but I'm sure employees w/o young children would cry foul. At least put affordable, quality daycare nearby on some of the many acres that PW owns.

Pros

Interesting hands-on work environment - it's definitely a dream job for someone who wants to see the products they are providing support for being made in real-time. The company offers great benefits and has a very strong tuition reimbursement package to utilize. The relaxed dress code for non-managerial staff is a plus.

Cons

Pratt is far too big to feel like you have the opportunity to advance quickly. The company is inherently bureaucratic and thus feels very far behind the times... it's far from nimble. Management is very much focused on politics - an issue that is noticed organization-wide and frowned upon by individual contributors. Overall there is very little recognition given for good work, and there is an overwhelming mood induced by feeling easily-replaceable and under-utilized.
