Pros

Willing to help you grow with training and getting your ASE.

Cons

This company is a freaking joke and anyone who says other wise is either a corporate type guy making good money or a suck-up. First off the company charges way to much for service. They charge sometimes more for a job then the dealer. Pepboys sometimes adds on silly fees so they can make more money off certain jobs. When people come to pepboys they think they will be paying less then the dealer. I personally have been told multiple times you charge more then the dealer. Also pepboys hourly rate is close to deaership rates which is not a good idea at all. Second pepboys pays for what we do is crazy low. Even if you been working for them for years you make poor money. The raises you get are a joke (cents not dollars). A good amount of corporate guys/gals make 6 figures but the employees make poor money. New potential employees getting interviewed think the pay is a joke. Third the company is not willing to get good working equipment for there workers. If something is broken it take them way to long before it is fixed. So the employees have to suffer. fourth the service advisers have outdated software. Sometimes if you put a vin in for a car instead of manually selecting the vehicle. Well the software sometimes does not know what parts will work for it like for an oil change. It will not know what filter will work for the car. Also the service writers have to manually write down the customer/car info on the repair order paper the technicians use to write down info on the car. Finally pepboys stores do not have interlinking software. If someone got work done at one pepboys. When they walk into yours for work and you want to see what was done at another pepboys. Well you can not see it on your computer. You have to call that pepboys that did the work and get them to give you the info over the phone or fax it. So if someone got tires with road hazard warranty and they had a blowout. They say they got the tires at another pepboys. So the service writer has to call the other pepboys to see if they got the road hazard warranty on the tires. You can't just look it up on the computer and if your busy with a line of people. People waiting get angry and wastes people time going through all this process just to find info that should be available to all pepboys stores. Fifth is the corporate offices micromanage everything you do. They do not care how hard you work but did you do or sell what we want you to do. You can sell 17 grand of service for the week, but if you did not sell enough alignments, add on (gumout one step, wipers, air/cabin filters), extended labor warranty. Then you stink as a service writer. Now the new thing is if you do not get enough emails or reward cards signup. You stink at doing your job. Does not matter if people decline getting emails or rewards card. Does not matter how much you sell as a service writer. It all comes down to how much alignments, add on (gumout one step, wipers, air/cabin filters), extended labor warranty you sell. If your a technician or a general service technician. Does not matter how good you do. If your not filling out your paper work to the degree the corporate office wants. You stink as a technician. Does not matter if you been with the company for 20 years or one. Your both put on the same microscope which is totally unfair. sixth and final (Could go on forever) is all the dumb crap you have to do working at pepboys. You have to do all these classes on the intranet just so pepboys can get cheaper insurance. Most of the training classes have nothing to do with fixing a cars or selling services. Yet you see the same classes over and over again. Then pepboys gives you sign, posters and other junk you have to fill out daily, weekly or hangup around the store. Just a bunch of wasted time besides actually working and doing your job. Now I can go on and on but I will leave it at what I wrote.

It can be lucrative in a high volume store. It is stressing but bonuses are a great incentives.

Pros

The people (not in management roles) are great. Everyone I've worked with, both on my team and cross functionally, is easy to work with and willing to help others. The people are really the only thing that make the job enjoyable. There is also a gym and a cafeteria, which are both nice to have given that the area outside the building is horrible and there is nowhere to walk to other than McDonald's.

Cons

- they try to take advantage of your pay: start you out as low as possible and it is extremely hard to get a raise over 2%. Most people get less than 2%. The company just doesn't have the money to give fair raises. - technology is ancient, I don't feel like I have the tools to succeed and there is too much manual work to be done which of course leaves room for many errors - old fashioned culture, many people are not able to work from home and many others are scared to ask when they feel they need it because it's practically frowned upon, even when it's snowing out and all of Philadelphia is shut down, including other retailers in the area, but Pep Boys doesn't close - the building is disgusting.. The floor has not been cleaned once in the years I have been there and there are dead cockroaches all over the place - sales are down so the atmosphere is tense
