Good Benefits, And They Treat You Pretty Well

Pros

I worked here (Space Park, Redondo Beach) for most of 1995 to 2017 (originally it was TRW, bought by Northrop Grumman in 2002). To this day, I still think the benefits are very good; there are many choices for medical, everything from premium PPOs to HMOs to opting out entirely (which some people do if their significant other has better benefits through another employer). Sure, it's probably not as generous as it was back in the 1990s, but where is that true today? Also, management always treated me pretty well, and there was always some emphasis on life/work balance - some people took that more seriously than others, but if you weren't obsessed with rapidly shooting up the corporate ladder, it was always acceptable to have other priorities besides just work. And with a company this size, there were a lot of different opportunities, so I never got stuck in the exact same role for years on end.

Cons

I was in satellites, and ever since Northrop bought the company in 2002, I've noticed a slow decline in the space side of the business (in favor of the much larger aircraft side). There are many more opportunities in aircraft these days, and I started to get the sense that corporate management wasn't all that interested in winning a lot of new space business anymore (just not nearly as much $$$ to be made as there is in military aircraft). So if you're interested in the space side of things, opportunities here seem to be much more limited than they were 12-20 years ago.

Pros

The development and production NGC executes for its clients is impressive. Other than that, I guess having every other Friday off is nice. But you need to work 9-hour days M-Th.

Cons

Every single minute of your 9-hour day is documented. If you take a 5 minute bathroom break, you can't charge that time so you need to work 9 hours and 5 minutes, for example. Furthermore, the facility at Rolling Meadows is atrocious. No windows, terrible culture, even worse "amenities." Also, the benefits package is not good. Anybody who says it is does not have knowledge in this arena. Rx coverage is lacking severely, contributions are high, and the "benefits center" is a useless resource. You need to communicate all requests through the benefits center, but this is impossible when their employees do not know what they're talking about. I have never been more frustrated with a benefits package.

Pros

- Innovative projects/programs - Good coworkers - Decent benefits - multiple locations HR has a stellar reputation for conflict resolution.

Cons

- Horrible middle management. They are given full decision making autonomy while rarely being held accountable. If you're hired on to a program or project team with this type of questionable leadership, you are doomed. - Zero work/life balance. At the direction of senior managent to cut cost, deliver on spec, and on schedule, middle management grossly under hires the required number of personnel for teams while utilizing the "do more with less" mentality. Subsequently, programs have extremely high turnover rates due to employee burnout and being multi-tasked to accomplish several different jobs that you weren't hired for. - Almost zero employee investment. #2 defense contractor. They could careless if you stay in the same position 2 years or 20 years. There are many employees that work 12+ hour days then turn around and are forced to seek higher certifications or training on their own limited free time. - Communication flow only exists between corporate and middle management. "The less the worker bees know the easier they are to control" methodology. Management won't teach you a thing about the company or their processes. If you want to understand what goes on within the company you'll spend countless hours surfing the internal websites trying to figure things out on your own.
