Pros

Salary and bonus are typically above average for the industry. Company pension in addition to 401K match.

Cons

Senior leadership is completely out of touch with industry dynamics; Antiquated systems, processes and physical office environment (the New York Office looks like it hasn't changed much since the 70s); resistant to change; a silo mentality that suppresses collaboration across teams and departments; a corporate culture that suppresses new ideas and new employees (common phrases include "This isn't how we do things around here"; "Come talk to me when you've been here longer than X years"); mediocre benefits from a company that prides itself on taking care of its customers; limited career growth (too top-heavy with employees that camp in senior positions)

Pros

I have worked for a number of financial firms, but none of them have made me feel as comfortable and appreciated as NYL. Usually you're surrounded by people who are laser focused on your faults rather than your successes and make you feel like your job is constantly in jeapordy. But my managers and team mates at NYL make me feel like they want to retain me and promote my growth. I can't say what it's like to be an agent, but working for the corporate side has been an excellent experience. The work can be demanding at times but your team will have your back and support you best they can. They've also been expanding the teams so the individual workload has been reduced and allowed us to give the best service we can to each situation. Especially since they changed my role to full time WFH/remote and it's a standard 40 hour work week, the work life balance is great as long as you're ok not choosing when you take breaks and lunch.

Cons

Initial base pay could be more competitive.

Pros

Flexible Schedule, an entrepreneurial aspect to the job, beneficial training and development from development managers, opportunity to gain financial licensing.

Cons

They'll tell you there is a base salary called your "training allowance" of $30k. What they fail to mention is that there is a trial period in which you have to sell a certain amount to qualify for this allowance, and that once you qualify or "trigger" your training allowance varies depending on how much you sell and whether or not you hit your quotas. The average person that stays there for a year will make a good chunk of money in commission and training allowance, but if you fail to sell quickly early on you will lose money by driving to work every day which will mean you are likely to quit after a few months. For this reason the company tells agents to sell to their natural market aka family and friends, which I felt was unprofessional.
