Pros

Pay is apparently the main draw among colleagues who joined laterally. Some of the work is pushing in the right directions, which is notable since so many of the firm's solutions are built in-house. There generally seems to be solidarity among colleagues within each area, although it's at least partly driven by siloed mindsets and disenchantment with firm culture and management. The focus on face time and hours means it's fairly common for employees to arrive ~8:30 and leave ~5:00.

Cons

Professionals are hired but then treated like children (e.g. strict policies on working hours, agile arrangements, timed breaks, and even the use of attendance sheets). Benefits are absurdly expensive, and 401k contributions are discretionary and only paid once a year. Pro-rating is considered an exception, meaning that depending on your hire date, you could potentially work 23 months before seeing a bonus, 401k contribution, or "merit" increase (really just a cost-of-living adjustment). Firm leadership lacks vision and charisma and is overly obsessed with revenue, to the detriment of health and the firm's culture. Teams generally seem tribalistic. Gossip is a key feature of the culture, and willingness to collaborate often seems driven by judgments of others' personalities. It's widely acknowledged that the firm is not a leader or innovator but rather aims for the middle ground. Benefits are paid periodically (e.g. PTO, 401k), rather than accruing with each pay period.

Pros

Good place to work. People are fairly pleasant.

Cons

Firm is cheap and you have to convince them to spend money. Additionally, the path to partner is completely about who you know and has little to do with your work product.

Pros

Very competitive pay, lawyers are generally kind relative to industry norms

Cons

Virtually no flexibility in home/life balance, bizarre communication in my department, very frustrating hierarchy, siloed departments (especially physically, with separate buildings)
