Pros

As a research assistant, you learn many of the organic chemistry skills and procedures, as well as how to operate a lot of advanced machinery, that will help you in undergraduate research at your own institution in the same field. These attributes will also make you a more attractive candidate for graduate student positions in geobiology.

Cons

Working with samples can be a little monotonous, and you are standing for much of the day. Wearing closed-toed shoes, pants, and long sleeves in the summer also can be a drag, but you can also leave these items at the building and change into them when you arrive.

Pros

Great opportunities, great people, great things being done. Fantastic research atmosphere, access to amazing resources.

Cons

MIT as a university needs to keep working on building a sense of community. They've been making progress over the last years, but there's still lots to do.
