Teaching in China's wild west.....

Pros

I've been working for EF English First in Urumqi for nearly three years. I took the opportunity to work in China and was quite open to any placement, Urumqi found me more than I found it. The last three years have been fantastic and after traveling throughout China over the last few years I can honestly say this is one of the most unique and fascinating places in China. EF have supported me throughout and there have been excellent opportunities for professional development and promotion, I've developed as a teacher and also as a manager during my time here. The accommodation, salary package and support provided by the company are very good and I feel like I've always had someone to go to if I've had a problem or needed help with something.

Cons

*Culturally Xinjiang/Urumqi is really different from the rest of China, read up before you come, you won't find a McDonalds or much in the way of Western comforts! *The weather is extreme, really hot in the Summer and super cold in the winter- I suggest you make the most of it by hiking and snowboarding at any chance!

Pros

I've worked for EF for a couple of years now, and I can say that they do do a lot of things well. I still remember when I first arrived in China, and the amount of support I got as a first time teacher, and first time traveler outside of the States. I still do get a lot of support and training, but sometimes the training is a bit too much - especially when your teaching schedule is hectic. The people are what makes the job, for me. There's lots of down to earth people, and I've made friends that I know I''l have for life, even when we all move on.

Cons

The teaching schedule can sometimes get a bit hectic, especially in the summer when the students are on holiday from their regular school (so that they all come to our school). The pay could improve somewhat, but you can still save money every month (I still send money back to pay for my student loan, can you believe).

Pros

There are a lot of benefits to working for EF - the support you get when you arrive in China is fantastic, and the people you work with are great. There is a clear progression if you're ambitious or want to stay in the TEFL business as a career. It is one of the best TEFL companies to teach with in China for these reasons, you hear lots of other teachers in other jobs complaining about aspects of their jobs that just don't affect you.

Cons

The salary is probably the biggest issue with EF. It seems that whenever you compare your salary with teachers from other companies, you come out on bottom. You are asked to work hard, and it as one of the leading names in China, it would be nice to be compensated accordingly.
