Pros

The kids you meet are great. They come to the school very enthusiastically and participate easily in the games that you create.

Cons

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. Once I had arrived in China my first two weeks were my "training". However, this only consisted of sitting in a room with a senior teacher and them telling me very obvious advice. Some of this advice consisted of "Get the kids to like you then they will be more willing to learn." The other part of the training was somewhat helpful as I watched experienced teachers teaching a class which was way more interesting and helpful. After these two weeks I began to teach my first classes, however it only seems as if the most difficult classes to teach are the only ones that count if they want to hire you for the entire year. These difficult classes consisted of 15+ kids who are between 9-13. Due to this difficulty and my lack of experience the classes got out of control as the rooms are not big enough to accommodate some of my games that I had planned. Ultimately it was decided that I did not impress enough while teaching these classes and I was let go. Lastly, I was informed that I had to leave the country in less than a week. However, they must have known this for over 2 days as I did not teach any classes during that time. This decision to have to meet with me to let me know that I needed to leave the country left me with buying a very expensive plane ticket as it was only a week away.

EF is a scam!

Pros

The school I worked for provided me with housing and picked me up from the airport. They paid me on time.

Cons

This is a terrible company! They are the Walmart equivalent of ESL teaching. They are a very large international company that makes most of its money in China because it is able to take advantage of the lack of workers' rights and the Chinese population's fascination with white faces. They also have ties with the government because it is illegal for a foreigner to teach in China without a Bachelor's degree, but I knew quite a few teachers with EF that did not hold a degree. It is quite sad because the parents pay $1,000s for these courses because they want their children to have an edge, as their children are their only retirement plan. These classes are taught completely unprofessionally from many unexperienced teachers (most of the good teachers leave) who are tired from 50 – 60 hours of work each week. The students are not receiving quality teaching. The material taught to the students (books and online components) allows the students to progress very slowly, so that the school can make as much money as possible from the parents, and there is a lack of support for the teachers. When I started I was thrown into many classes without even knowing what I was doing. Throughout the year I taught there, I was never trained on many facets of the job, even though I frequently asked for help. The courses are a joke and would never work in many countries, but because China is obsessed with white faces, the school is able to scam the parents, the foreign teachers, and the students.

Teacher in Wuhan China

Pros

Some great students, and a good network of English speaking people are immediately accessible to you, which is comforting at times.

Cons

Terrible management, treat employees like cogs in a machine. 'Summer fun' and 'winter fun' are ridiculous, work horrendously long hours over 6 days a week, and are given no extra pay. Staff are given vague details based on sales of extra courses to students but are never paid the agreed amount.
