Pros

Some people really and truly care about kids. There is a sense of wanting to make things better. Many students are nice and do want to learn.

Cons

There is almost zero accountability for teachers. Teachers are able to do anything they want with little to no repercussions. Although teachers are encouraged to track students' progress and teach at high levels, there's no firm measure of this actually happening. Therefore, students continue to fail year after year after year. School leadership is so bogged down with disciplinary issues that there is almost no time to get in classrooms and observe teachers. Teacher pay is so low that almost all good teachers go to different districts or different schools where they don't have to put up with low pay and disrespect from students. I never thought that as a teacher I would be consistently bullied by students and parents to the point of not wanting to come in to teach. Most of the students are nice and do want to get an education, however there are often four to five children who make it almost impossible to teach and who take learning time away from the rest of the class. Unfortunately, not much is done about this. Almost every day I hear about students throwing chairs across the classroom or yelling obscenities at teachers, being sent out to the principal and then being sent right back to class. Not to mention I often have to buy my own supplies for students because I never get any materials. This year alone I had to buy with my own money paper to print tests and daily assignments. Tulsa Public is in huge need of reform.
