Poor culture. HR outright hostile. Rules for some and not others. Huge pay gaps. (Dowty Propellers only) - Anonymous employee GE Aerospace Employee Review

Pros

Good pay and benefits for middle managers with light workload Pension If your face fits you can go far and transfer to 'proper' GE in Bishops Cleeve or further

Cons

This seems to be a Dowty Propellers Gloucester problem only, as friends in GE Bishops Cleeve are happy. There seems to be a big divide between how Bishops Cleeve employees are treated and how Dowty employees are treated. (I think the positive reviews on this site must be for GE Bishops Cleeve or by senior managers at Dowty) Stagnant pay and high workload for anyone who isn't LPB. All work put on lower employees, the longer you stay the more work you are given with no progression or compensation. Poor work-life balance because of this Huge pay gaps between employees and managers, sometimes doing the same job. I don't know how they can pay one person 25k and another 40k for essentially the same work. Hypocrisy - "cost-out" savings drive sees GE penny pinching on all areas but then managers are claiming £400 on a meal out at Zizzi's, and managers brought over from the US on all-expense-paid contracts on £100k and their mortgage paid for. Lower employees put on redundancy notice and had to re-apply for all their jobs - However nobody was fired and they brought in another middle manager on 60k - Great cost saving exercise, HR! Very sycophantic culture for the senior management, while lowers employees are ignored or at worst blamed. Pats on back for LPB's and above, carrot and stick for anyone below. Senior management are given big bonuses which seems to be why they hassle lower employees to breaking point, lots of stress leave in the teams. Incompetence seems to be rewarded with promotion, are departments promoting to get rid of people who are messing things up because they're afraid to sack them? GE are pushing their "culture and values" but they're not being adhered to by some management. HR department are downright nasty and rude. They make it very clear they are serving the company, and you as the employee can like it or lump it. Very unpleasant to deal with. Finally the site cancelled their recycling contract to save money! Now we throw away all recyclables regardless

Pros

The engineers who work hard and take themselves seriously are still working here and are great to collaborate with and solve problems. The projects are interesting, as long as your manager is considering your interests and career path. There are ample opportunities in commercial and military, with the commercial being more of a remote/Teams environment and military being more in person. Bonus structure is strong, 15%. Incentive pay for coming to work. Work life balance mostly depends on the job you sign up for.

Cons

Managers may not have come up through the engineering ranks and so they may not understand us. They focus more on process, like Flight Deck, than having actual knowledge to solve problems. The technical expertise in the sub section and especially section level has gone down in the last 5-10 years. This less technical management class seems to be impacting engineering turnover among the IC’s. Additionally, constant pivots, often due to inconsistent funding, also decrease morale. Lastly, it’s possible your manager doesn’t care as much about your career as they do just getting tasks done / covering the bases. Basically non-existent health care (very high premium and deductible for larger families). Biased hiring through Next Engineers.
