They always ask about teaching to a diverse student body. The harsh reality is that there is no ready or easy answer, so don't try to obfuscate or be politically correct. There are many kinds of diversity, show that you're aware, social class, race, ethnicity, age, gender, nationality (and these are not the same thing, look them up before you interview), religion, and prior educational preparation, we get all of this diversity. It's silly to say "we're all basically the same," because, this would be the opposite of diversity. A diverse student body means that you have to observe, understand, respect, and respond to the diversity. The easiest strategy is dumbing down the material, which would be what George Bush called, "the soft bigotry of low expectations," that's not the MATC strategy. An unrealistic strategy is to engage all your students with some magical new pedagogy that works for everyone, anyone claiming that I find to be highly suspect. You need to be realistic when faced with this question, acknowledge the challenge, we have to be flexible, innovative, try to inspire and train students to engage in college, to do the academic work, without lowering standards. I would rent and watch "Stand and Deliver," before your interview. Look up all our hundreds of vocational certification programs as well, part of what we do here is advise students in college tracks, sometimes, to change to one of the vocational tracks, when that's more appropriate.
