tell them that you'd find a way to address the customer without directly telling them they're stealing. for example, if you see someone stealing a top say: "hey i really like that blue top you just grabbed! i feel like this jacket would look great with it!". you have to be very specific about the item that's being stolen so that the customer knows you know.
