What would you do when faced with a difficult customer?

You have to get to the bottom of what it is they are looking to get out of their experience. Are they looking for anything in particular? Are they being 'difficult' because of a previous bad experience and therefore have their guard up? What can I personally do to overcome any doubts they may have. Go above and beyond to reassure them that I am looking to help them and not challenge or intimidate them.
