While working in the service industry, there have been many times where a customer has been upset, either due to wait times or a mistake with their order. For example, I had a customer who had recently been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I explained which menu items were (or could be) gluten free and explained how we were able to complete this need of hers. The meal and transaction went off without a hitch, until the next day. She returned to the bar explaining that she had been sick all night and believed it was due to the food provided to her. I immediately apologized and assured her that I would talk with out chef again to determine what went wrong. Turns out, while the pizza dough was gluten free, the breading on the chicken was not. I informed our manager of the mistake on the menu and apologized profusely. This did not de-escalate the situation. I then went to my manager again and fought on the customer’s behalf to find a way to rectify the situation in some fashion. I was able to find a solution that satisfied the customer and aligned with my manager’s wishes/company policy. This situation with this customer strengthened my problem solving and critical thinking skills. It taught me that even if you are educated to the expectations of the job title or your own personal standards, you can always learn more and ask questions without disrespecting others around you.
