This was probably the worst interview experience I’ve ever had. Let me start by saying that the HR department was very professional. During the phone screening, they confirmed a lot of information and provided some interview tips. At that point, I had a gut feeling that something might be off with this hiring manager.
Then came the 30-minute video interview. First, she arrived late. When I began introducing myself, she didn’t make eye contact the entire time and seemed preoccupied with something else. Once I finished my introduction, she immediately asked if I had any questions for her and bluntly told me that I wasn’t a good fit for the role.
I had spent the entire evening preparing relevant project experience for this interview, but she didn’t ask a single question about it. When I directly asked her why she felt I wasn’t fit, she dodged the question and simply apologized. HR had reviewed my resume and felt that I was a strong match for the position, and I tailored my introduction to align with the job requirements as much as possible.
If you’re only looking to hire someone of your own race, just say it outright, and don’t waste my time.
