Interview
1. Recruiter reached out to schedule a 30 minutes call
2. 60 minutes interview call with a head of product
3. Unresponsive for 2 weeks until I received the no-go email
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Case study interview on one of the three capital one products, on average how much revenue does a customer generate monthly.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (Chicago, IL) in May 2022
Interview
The process overall was good I felt very supported by my HR contact - she was transparent and gave me updates on my status almost daily. The final round interview was a 4.5 hour stretch consisting of 4 case interviews. My only frustration with this was that although I felt it went well and didn't get an offer, they couldn't offer me any feedback due to "risk management".
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
For the first round case interview I was provided 3 different services in advance (2 existing in capital one and 1 hypothetical that required market research). On the day of they selected one and we spent roughly an hour discussing. For the final round "power day" there were 4 different interviews: Business Analytics (mathematical equations that allow you to make a recommendation), Product Design (wide scope product design), Product Skills (discuss product life cycle of a real product you have experience with), and Job Fit. My HR rep did a great job preparing me for those, she called about a week in advance and walked me through what the steps would be. Overall, the interviewers were very easy to talk to and would lead me in the right direction of what they're looking for if I was off track. Again, my only frustration comes from the amount of time invested without any real feedback.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Capital One
Interview
1. Phone Screen with HR
2. Call with Hiring Manager (Sr.Manager/ Director /Sr. Director-Level Personnel)
3. Mini-Case Interview
4. Power-Day Interview (4 interviews in one day)
All interviews were completed remotely in my case.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The power day interview consisted of four interviews.
1. Product Design Case. Here you are presented with a problem (info given via ppt slides) and you work with the interviewer to come up with a solution.
Advice: Make sure your solutions address a customer pain point and make business sense. Try to consider the customer journey and where you would make improvements.
********************
2. Product Skills Interview. Talk about a product you managed/designed with 2 capital one product mangers.
Advice: Think through the product development process. What you did at each step. Why you did it. The value developed for the customer. How you measured success along the way. (And keep it friendly and conversational. Try to imagine a world where you do not have interview anxiety and that this could be fun!)
********
Analyst Case: Solve a business problem. Here, the interviewer asks you questions in phases to get to the root of a business problem. This is a typical business case.
Advice: The example in the preparation packet is pretty close to what you end up doing. Also, If you can solve mckinsey style cases, you should be good for this case. Check out youtube for examples. Victor Chang's Business Situation Framework is good to have in your back pocket. Also be prepared for market sizing.
****************
4. Behavioral Interview. Often with a Software Engineer/Tech lead.
Advice: Think about what the interviewer may want to know. For the example of the tech lead, it could be things like... what are your technical chops? How do you play nice with others? What are some things you do to regularly advance your skills? What can you do for him/her? Traditional behavioral questions: Why Product? Why this job? etc. are also applicable.
Come prepared with questions for all interviewers, but especially the behavioral interviewer.
GOOD LUCK!!!
